Portsmouth Diocese e-News Issue 486

April 8th, 2025
trump tariffs

The world seems to be in economic turmoil this week as President Trump’s imposition of trading tariffs takes effect. From the point of view of Catholic social teaching, tariffs raise a number of moral issues related to human dignity, poverty and global solidarity. They impact human beings not just the markets. We need to evaluate them therefore not just by their economic benefits or disbenefits but by their impact on people, especially the poorest, and by their contribution to peace, justice and the common good. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to show us the right ways forward.

Welcome to this week’s e-News, today Tuesday 8th April 2025. We are now in the Fifth Week of Lent and next week we begin Holy Week. Next Tuesday, we have the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral: please do come and join us if you can. Meanwhile, I pray that Lent is going well for you. Thank you for all you do for the love of the Lord and His Church. Have a blessed week ahead.

In Corde Iesu
