Bishop Philip writes…
One of Pope Leo’s interests is artificial intelligence and how it can positively serve human dignity, justice, and the common good. On the other hand, its development should reflect God the Creator’s design: “intelligent, relational, and guided by love.” With this in mind, I was listening in the car the other day to BBC Radio 4’s weekly programme Inside Science, which featured an interview with Geoffrey Hinton who holds the Turing Prize, the Nobel Prize and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering for his pioneering work on AI. You can listen to the programme here. In it, Hinton gives some dark warnings that AI could bring about the end of humanity unless strict ethical safeguards are put in place.
