This year, St Peter’s marked the 100th anniversary of the first Mass celebrated in our present church building, giving thanks for a century of prayer, worship and service. The celebrations also honoured the rich story of Catholic faith in Winchester, from the witness of the Winchester Martyrs to the generations of parishioners who have lived, shared and passed on the Gospel in this place.

The week brought together parishioners, clergy, civic leaders and distinguished guests from across the Diocese and beyond. We were delighted to welcome Bishop Philip Egan, Bishop Crispian Hollis, clergy from across the Diocese, civic representatives and many former parishioners.

We were especially honoured to welcome His Excellency Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía, Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, who brought a special message and Apostolic Blessing from His Holiness Pope Leo XIV; a wonderful and historic gift for our parish community.

A particular highlight was the celebration of the Centenary Mass by His Eminence Cardinal Vincent Nichols, whose homily reflected on the enduring faith, witness and mission of St Peter’s Parish.

Key events included:

• Solemn Ecumenical Vespers for the Vigil of St Swithun (14 July)
• Centenary Mass on the Solemnity of St Swithun (15 July)
• A joyful Gathering of Parishioners Past and Present, including the celebration of Fr Mark Hogan’s Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years of priestly ministry
• A programme of community events bringing together generations of parishioners to celebrate our heritage and future mission

Under the centenary theme, “A Place for All”, the celebrations reflected both gratitude for the past and confidence in the future as we continue our mission of bringing people closer to Jesus Christ in hope and joy.
